http://booktv.org/program.aspx?ProgramId=9400&SectionName=History&PlayMedia=NoJourney Through Hallowed Ground … the speech given here by David McCullough is Worth the Listening!!!
Note you can play the video on the page – McCullough’s talk begins about ½ in and you can move the play bar ahead to get to it. If you have read “John Adams” or “1776” you may have a clue to his value as a writer.

http://www.thegunzone.com/1911-cavalry.html (re the last army cavalry charge)
ahhh… the .45 cal. Automatic, 1911 model..
an interesting note … including the last mounted cavalry charge of 1942!
This is the pistol the Navy taught me to use at OCS in 1970. I still remember the movie they showed with the Marine in the jungle who has to whip out his 1911 to dispatch a Vietcong. He turns around to see the VC. He brings his 1911 to bear and takes care and time to aim correctly and slowly squeeze the trigger. Soooo – slowly. The VC drops into a creek in the Jungle . The narrator says “ One bullet – one dead Communist”.
I earned an Expert ribbon in using the 1911 but it could hardly compete with our 5” naval guns a mile off shore near the DMZ. Plus, the only time I ever knew of a .45 being used on our ship was when the Gunner’s mate got drunk in Subic once and got his ’45 from the gun locker and started waving it around on the quarterdeck. The Officer of the Deck was one of my buddies. They talked him down. He gave up the gun and about three stripes and gained time in the brig.
